Slip-N-Slide History

In an industry short on longevity, one constant has remained in the South over the past decade: the success of Slip-N-Slide Records. With upwards of 10 million records sold worldwide, numerous gold and platinum albums, and the presence of three superstars in Rick Ross, Plies, and Trina, Slip-N-Slide now is poised to reach even greater heights with their plans to expand and branch out into all genres of music starting with the signing of American Idol finalist Christina Christian.

At a time when bass music ruled the landscape in South Florida, Slip-N-Slide Records revolutionized the "Miami Sound", introducing a style of rap music from Miami unfamiliar to the remainder of the United States. Founded in 1994 by Ted "Touche" Lucas, Slip-N-Slide began its official climb to the top when Trick Daddy released his debut album Based On A True Story, selling close to 300,000 copies independently. Then in 1998, following key strategic positioning, Slip-N-Slide reached the nation and reached it big with the release of Trick Daddy's sophomore album WWW.THUG.COM and the first single "Nann." With "Nann" the nation was introduced to Slip-N-Slide Records, Trick Daddy, and the new sexy starlet Trina who performed guest vocals.

With a combination of strategic marketing and street teams, Slip-N-Slide was able to break the record during Super Bowl Weekend in Miami. Every major label was in town to enjoy the parties leading up to the game and they were blown away as "Nann" was in heavy rotation on the radio and in every club. "The Monday after the Super Bowl was crazy," recalls Lucas. "Every label was trying to make a deal with me. The lobby of my office was packed. It took 3 or 4 days, but I finally made a deal with Atlantic."

After independent sales of WWW.THUG.COM reached over 800,000 copies, Slip-N-Slide Records, under its new distribution deal with Atlantic Records, prepared to drop its major label release of Trick Daddy's third album Book of Thugs: Chapter AK, Verse 47 and the debut album from Trina, titled Da Baddest B*tch. Boasting the hit singles "Shut Up" and "Pull Over", the albums both went on to reach Gold status, cementing the duo as stars and serving notice that Slip-N-Slide was a powerhouse in the industry.

In 2001, Slip-N-Slide soared to new heights with Trick Daddy's fourth album, Thugs R Us, which featured the wildly successful singles, "I'm A Thug" and "Take It To Da House." Behind their strength, Thugs R Us would sell over 1 million albums, making it the first Platinum album released under Slip-N-Slide Records. "… This is a 24 hour business" says Lucas. "You can never sleep and I won't sleep until the day I die. So having a Platinum album is only one step of the way toward where I want this company to go." Riding on the back of Thugs R Us's sales, Slip-N-Slide was able to land the soundtrack to the hit Ice Cube action-comedy All About the Benjamins, starring Ice Cube and Mike Epps and featuring the Trina single "Told Ya'll" produced by Cool and Dre.

In 2003, Slip-N-Slide saw a fifth album from Trick Daddy, the Gold-selling Thug Holiday, which featured the title track produced by David Banner and "Dro In The Wind" featuring Cee-Lo and Big Boi. Also, 2003 saw the second album from Trina titled Diamond Princess which boasted the smash single "BR Right" featuring Ludacris.

Moving into present day, not only has Slip-N-Slide just released Trick Daddy’s sixth album, Back By Thug Demand, with the smash singles “Bet That” and ”Tuck Ya Ice,” Slip-N-Slide has also found a new superstar waving their flag, Rick Ross. With the only ringtone to reach platinum sales before the release of the actual album, Rick Ross’s certified platinum, Port of Miami, released on Def Jam / Slip-N-Slide, has launched the superstar into an overnight legend. The smash hits “Hustlin’” and “Push It” have set Ross up to release his star-studded second album on August 8, 2007, featuring Jay-Z, Pharrell, R Kelly, Usher and more.

2007 will also see a new release by Trina as well as the August 7,2007 debut album of Slip-N-Slide’s newest phenomenon, Plies. Hailed as the next Tupac, Plies already has the streets locked down with his smash hit single, “Shawty” featuring T-Pain.

When asked about the future of Slip-N-Slide, Lucas responded, “I am always proud of the fact that we made Trick and Trina into stars. I want Slip-N-Slide to evolve into a Def Jam, or an Atlantic, where we can go out and make the next star because there is always another one out there." Lucas has recently been handpicked to head up the Def Jam mix-tape department where he will work to oversee the launch of Def Jam’s new Def Jam Presents DJ and mixtape albums, and he has also founded Slip-N-Slide Street, a development side of Slip-N-Slide dedicated to discovering and nurturing new artists. Slip-N-Slide’s main focus for this year is to expand into every genre of popular music and become prime competition for the Majors.

With the success of foundation artists like Trina and Trick Daddy, the overwhelming sales figures of the now legendary Rick Ross, and new artists Plies and Christina Christian poised to follow in their Slip-N-Slide predecessors footsteps, the future of Slip-N-Slide Records looks bright…especially under the Miami sun.
